The Psychology of Type

Our reactions to type are similar in many ways to our responses to color. We are influenced by past experiences and associations. Most people have an expectation about what type should reflect. Take a look at the examples of the type selected for the phrase “It was a dark and scary night. . . .” Which one of these examples does not look right? Only one of these says “dark and scary” (fig. 8-22). Even people who don’t understand the intricacies of type sense the correct usage of letterform.
